Imaging Above Everything
Blueberry Education Youth Programmes (BEYOP) delivered a practical Vinyl Applicator Skills Training Programme designed to equip young people with hands-on skills in vinyl application, surface preparation, measuring, cutting, installation and finishing.
The short course covered three practical areas: Vehicle Wrapping, Architectural Vinyl Application and Wallpaper Installation. Training was delivered in Pretoria Soshanguve, giving participants practical experience they can use to pursue employment, freelance opportunities and entrepreneurship.
A practical, hands-on two-week short course teaching young people a trade they can earn from: vehicle wrapping, architectural vinyl application and wallpaper installation.
Blueberry Education Youth Programmes delivered the Vinyl Applicator Skills Training Programme in partnership with Empower NPO, training 70 young people over two weeks of hands-on work in vinyl application, from surface preparation right through to finishing.
This was not a classroom course about a trade. Over the full two weeks participants worked with the actual materials, tools and surfaces they would encounter on a paying job, and left able to do the work rather than simply describe it.
The short course was built around three distinct applications of the same core skill set. Each one opens a different kind of work.
Applying vinyl to cars, bakkies and delivery vehicles. Participants learned to work around curves, recesses, handles and bumpers, where heat, tension and patience decide whether the finish lifts or lasts. This is the area with the strongest demand from branding companies and signage shops.
Applying vinyl to interior and exterior surfaces: shopfronts, glass, doors, walls, counters and office partitions. Covers frosted and privacy films, branding and signage, and surface-refresh vinyls that let a business renovate its look without replacing anything.
Measuring, cutting, hanging and trimming wallpaper to a professional standard. Matching patterns across seams, working around plugs, corners and windows, and preparing walls properly so the result does not bubble or peel.
Every one of the three areas rests on the same foundation. Get these right and the finish looks professional; get them wrong and no amount of expensive material will save the job.
Cleaning, degreasing and assessing the surface before anything is applied. Most failed vinyl jobs fail here, long before the material goes on.
Measuring the area accurately, allowing for overlap and trim, and calculating how much material a job actually needs. This is also where quoting properly begins.
Cutting cleanly and safely with the right blade, including cutting in place without damaging the surface underneath.
Positioning, squeegee technique, and working air and bubbles out of the material. Using heat correctly to shape vinyl around curves and into recesses.
Handling large panels, aligning seams, and working methodically across a full surface rather than patch by patch.
Trimming edges, sealing where required, post-heating, and inspecting the completed job to a standard a paying client will accept.
Participants worked with the standard equipment of a working applicator: squeegees and felt-edged blades, heat guns, precision knives and spare blades, tape measures and straight edges, application fluid and spray bottles, cleaning solvents, and masking tape for positioning. Learning to handle these properly, and safely, was part of the training.
Vinyl application suits a young person starting out because:
Training took place in Soshanguve, Pretoria, keeping it accessible to the young people it was designed for. Running the programme in the community, rather than expecting participants to travel far and pay transport they cannot afford, is a deliberate part of how BEYOP works.

No previous experience is required. What matters is attention to detail, patience, and a willingness to practise.
Add a short quote from a participant here, in their own words, describing what they learned and what they plan to do with it.
This programme was delivered by Blueberry Education Youth Programmes (BEYOP) in partnership with Empower NPO. Partnerships like this let us combine reach, facilities and technical expertise so that more young people get access to training that leads somewhere.
The Vinyl Applicator Skills Training Programme sits within our wider skills development and employment pathways work, alongside education support, career guidance, workplace readiness and community programmes. The aim is the same throughout: give young people something concrete they can use to earn.
